With the No. 1 overall pick in the 2011 draft, the Carolina Panthers select Auburn quarterback Cam Newton.
The Heisman Trophy winner led Auburn to a national championship this past season and is possibly the most athletically-gifted quarterback to enter the NFL since Michael Vick in 2001.
However, like Vick, Newton will take a lot of time to develop. He will have to be taught to read a defense pre-snap and go through his progressions rather than tucking the ball and running if his one and only read isn’t open. That will work in college, but not in the NFL.
Newton is boom or bust. Panthers fans should be cautiously optimistic and not except any true production from Newton until, at earliest, his second year in the league. Expect another season of Jimmy Clausen before Newton takes a single snap from Ryan Kalil.
