2011 NFL Draft: San Francisco 49ers Select Mizzou DE/OLB Aldon Smith

With the No. 7 overall pick in the 2011 NFL draft the San Francisco 49ers select DE/OLB hybrid Aldon Smith.

Smith played defensive end at Mizzou, but will play outside linebacker in the 49ers’ 3-4 scheme. He has drawn some comparisons to DeMarcus Ware, but that might be a bit premature, and this might be a bit of a stretch.

Give credit for new head coach Jim Harbaugh, however, for not feeling like he had to draft a quarterback because that’s what rookie head coaches usually do. Harbaugh clearly has some faith in Alex Smith and understands that teams win championships on defense.

Even though I’m a bit skeptical of taking Smith this high, I like taking defense first here.
