Report: Osi Umenyiora Could Require Knee Surgery… So He Says

facebooktwitterreddit

The standoff between the New York Giants and defensive end Osi Umenyiora has now reached a new low. Umenyiora is now refusing to practice because of a sore knee. He has even gone as far as telling the team that his injured knee may require surgery. The knee injury has only been mentioned by Umenyiora, who wants a new contract. It seems like the Giants do not believe him.

“Although the Giants had no official comment on Umenyiora’s injury, the fact they said ‘he says’ he’s injured was a good indication that they don’t believe him – or at least that they’re skeptical of the extent of the injury. It seems more likely – if not obvious – it’s just an excuse to sit out of practice until the Giants decide to redo his contract or trade him to a team that will,” wrote Ralph Vacchiano of the New York Daily News.

You should never question a player’s toughness or not take them for their word, but Umenyiora’s case is a special one. He has made it clear he doesn’t want to play for the team under the current circumstances, so he could be trying to force the Giants hand.

This is definitely one to watch. Who will blink first: the Giants or Umenyiora? Should the Giants just cut ties with the defensive end? Only they know what they will do next.
