Ricky Williams To Retire

Ricky Williams has retired from the NFL for the second time today, but this one should be for real. Williams retired leaving a pretty solid legacy, but I don’t believe he will be remembered as one of the greats like other big name running backs.

Williams ended his career being the 26th running back to have over 10,000 yards on the ground. Williams retired previously in 2004, but returned to the NFL in 2005. He was a very good college RB from Texas, where he won the Heisman trophy.  In 2000, the New Orleans Saints traded up in the draft to pick Williams 5th overall.

“The NFL has been an amazing page in this chapter of my life,” Williams said. “I pray that all successive adventures offer me the same potential for growth, success and most importantly, fun. … As for what’s next, I am excited about all the opportunities ahead—continuing my education, running The Ricky Williams Foundation and whatever other opportunities present themselves.”

I hate to see any NFL player retire, because they are the guys I’ve watched every Sunday during football season for years. I do realize, however, a man can only give so much for so long. Ricky Williams spent eleven years in the league, and that’s pretty good for running backs. I wish Williams the best, and I wouldn’t be surprised to see him coaching somewhere at the college level in the years to come.
