NFL Draft 2012: David DeCastro Scouting Report

facebooktwitterreddit

Player: David DeCastro
Postition: Offensive Guard
School: Stanford
Height: 6-foot-5
Weight: 310 pounds

Positves: Great build and is a huge man, tenacious and blocks to the whistle, good in pass pro but really excels in run blocking, seems to always get initial push, stout at POA (point of attack), agile and great at pulling up to linebackers, always fights to get his guy on the ground, strong and once he locks on to a defender it’s over, smart at picking up blitzes, keeps head on a swivel, quick off the ball with good feet, just flat out aggressive, played on a great Stanford O-line with Jonathan Martin.

Negatives: Tends to get a narrow base causing him to lean or get off balance, a bit stiff in the knees and needs to bend more, gets stood up in pass pro sometimes, overruns defenders.

Draft Grade: Top 15

Overview: DeCastro has one thing that separates a successful 6’5” 310 pound lineman from a sub-par 6’5” 310 pound lineman…attitude. Having great technique and two hall of fame NFL blockers on your coaching staff also doesn’t hurt. He’s big and strong enough to match up well against even the best NFL defensive lineman, and agile enough to pull around blocks and not get juked out by linebackers. DeCastro should be a long term fix on a team’s line for years to come.
