NFL Draft 2012: Mystery Team Looking Into Robert Griffin III Trade?

The St. Louis Rams’ decision to trade the No. 2 overall pick has set off a whirlwind of rumors for potential teams looking to acquire Robert Griffin III, the Heisman Trophy-winning quarterback from Baylor.

Both the Cleveland Browns and the Washington Redskins are viewed as the front-runners to make a deal. Cleveland has two first round picks in this year’s draft, having picked up the 22nd overall selection from Atlanta as compensation for Julio Jones.

The Redskins are in dire need of a quarterback, have the sixth pick and an owner who’s always willing to make a splash.
However, John Czarnecki of Fox Sports speculated there may be at least one mystery team considering a deal. According to Czarnecki, the Denver Broncos, more specifically John Elway, love Griffin as a prospect and have scouted quarterbacks extensively in Indianapolis. He also believes the Eagles would trade Michael Vick for Griffin straight up and that the Cowboys should think the trade over.

In addition to the Browns and Redskins, the Rams have also spoken to the Miami Dolphins, who draft No. 8, about negotiating a deal. The Dolphins have not drafted a quarterback in the first round since they selected Dan Marino in 1983.

Sources tell ESPN’s Adam Schefter that the Rams will seek compensation comparable to what the San Diego Chargers received for Eli Manning in 2004. The Chargers received the New York Giants’ No. 4 overall pick (Philip Rivers), their third-round pick (Nate Kaeding), New York’s first pick in 2005 (Shawne Merriman) and a fifth-rounder San Diego eventually traded.
