Rex Ryan: Tim Tebow Will Be A Major Contributor
By Josh Sanchez
The New York Jets will hold a press conference tomorrow to introduce backup quarterback Tim Tebow as the newest member of the team. It was initially announced that Tebow would be a backup who would play in limited packages, but we are all smarter than that and know he will eventually push for the starting job.
Jets head coach Rex Ryan furthered that belief today, when speaking to the NFL Network. According to Ryan, Tebow could be on the field for up to twenty snaps a game.
“Tim is going to be a major contributor to our football team,” Ryan said. “With the Wildcat specifically, the great thing is you don’t know if we’re going to run it one snap a game or 20 snaps a game — you have no idea. Every week it could be different. That’s some of the preparation problems he gives you.”
The problem with that is the more that Tebow practices his packages, the less reps Mark Sanchez will get in practice. That means, Sanchez could struggle and it wouldn’t completely be his fault. And you know, as soon as those struggles begin, the fans will be calling Tebow’s name.
No matter how hard the Jets try, a quarterback controversy is going to erupt this season and it is going to break the lock room even further apart.
Make no question about it. At some point this season, Tebow will be given the keys to the Jets offense and take over as the starter. This will leave Sanchez on the outs as the next Kyle Orton. The Jets are setting themselves up for unnecessary controversy and attention, but hey, this is New York.
