Mark Sanchez & Santonio Holmes Working Out Together This Offseason

Earlier in the offseason and late last season, there were reports that New York Jets quarterback Mark Sanchez and wide receiver Santonio Holmes were at odds and it was a large part of the Jets poor locker room atmosphere. While that could be correct, the two seem to be taking steps to improve their chemistry on and off the field.

In order to prepare for the upcoming season, Sanchez and Holmes are working out together in Florida. A few more Jets — tight end Dustin Keller, receiver Patrick Turner and running back Joe McKnight — were also reportedly in the group.

Trainer Tom Shaw spoke with Jenny Vrentas of the New Star-Ledgar to give a little insight on the workouts.

Mark was in charge, everyone was listening to his instructions,” Shaw said.  “Guys from other teams, too.  [Titans running back] Chris Johnson, Larry Taylor, who used to be with the Jets. Once we finished the workout for the day, Sanchez took over.  He was in charge of the whole offensive part.  He is working hard, and he’s doing everything he can to get better.”

The news is great for the Jets. Sanchez said, after receiving his contract extension earlier in the offseason, that he was aiming to really step up and be the team’s leader going into the upcoming season. He is putting that leadership on display by working with some of his teammates and leading their work outs.

As for the relationship between Sanchez and Holmes, they seem to be doing just fine.

“I know for a fact Santonio Holmes and Mark Sanchez are close,” Shaw said.

How will this translate to the field of play? We will have to wait and see. Until then, Jets fans should rejoice that their star receiver and quarterback are taking the time to build a solid repertoire.
