The door was opened for Miami Dolphins 2012 first-round pick Ryan Tannehill to win the team’s starting quarterback job when veteran David Garrard was sidelined with knee surgery. The opportunity was there and the rookie took every advantage of the chance he was given. Tannehill has now been rewarded for his efforts.
Dolphins head coach Joe Philbin announced today that Tannehill would be the team’s starting quarterback for the 2012 season.
Tannehill was initial expected to start the year on the bench backing up either Garrard or Matt Moore but the performance Tannehill put together this preseason has changed the coaches minds.
Tannehill worked with offensive coordinator Mike Sherman when Sherman was head coach at Texas A&M so he is familiar with the Dolphins new offense. It helped Tannehill get ahead of the learning curve and set him up to win the job.
For the Dolphins, the future is now.
