Steelers First-Round Pick David DeCastro Has Torn MCL; Undergoing ACL Test

The Pittsburgh Steelers were happy to have Stanford offensive guard David DeCastro fall into their laps in the first-round of the 2012 NFL Draft. DeCastro was ready for the NFL and was going to be plugged into the starting lineup immediately to help the Steelers poor offensive line. At least that was the plan.

Things changed Saturday night when DeCastro injured his knee against the Buffalo Bills. The college All-American has been diagnosed with a torn MCL and will undergo further tests to see if his ACL was torn as well. As it stands now, DeCastro will miss at least half of the season. If the ACL is injured as well, his rookie season will be spent on injured reserve.

Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisber pointed to the FieldTurf as the reason DeCastro suffered his knee injury.

“It’s just FieldTurf — this is a great field, but FieldTurf is just killing guys because they can’t get their feet out of the ground.” Roethlisberger said, “It’s just another reason we should get rid of FieldTurf.”

The injury actually was caused when Marcus Gilbert rolled up on DeCastro’s leg. No matter what caused it, the injury is a very unfortunate one for the Steelers who will be without their top pick.
