The NFL sent out a memo to all 32 teams this past week asking them to honor former Cleveland Browns owner Art Modell. Modell owned the team from 1961-1995. While many teams will hold a pre-game moment of silence or scoreboard tribute, the Browns have cancelled their pre-game tribute per the Modell family’s request.
Browns president Mike Holmgren said he spoke to Modell’s son David and his family and that ‘we want to do the right thing by the Modell family.’
“David told Mike that he really appreciated the call and the offer, but that he knew it would not be totally accepted by the Cleveland fans,” Baltimore Ravens spokesman Kevin Byrne said.
“David suggested that the Browns not do a tribute.”
Cleveland fans remain angry at Modell for the team’s move to Baltimore and any sort of recognition was not going to be well received by their faithful fans. It is sad to see but it is also a smart move by the Browns to avoid any negativity towards Modell and his family.
