The St. Louis Rams have locked up one of their top defenders for the next five years after giving linebacker James Laurinaitis a $41.5 million contract extension. ESPN’s Adam Schefter broke the news:

The Rams are putting together a solid young defense with some key pieces in place for the long term. Laurinaitis is under contract until 2017 and defensive end Chris Long is under contract until 2016. Add first-round pick Michael Brockers to the mix and the Rams have a great group of guys to lead their defense moving forward.
