The Steve Breaston Market

Since the Kansas City Chiefs let Steve Breaston go there has been speculation about where he would wind up. The early leaders in his brief free agency period seemed to be the Pittsburgh Steelers. For those curious as to why he can negotiate with teams now before free agency officially begins, it’s because he was released and his contract was terminated in other words it didn’t naturally expire.

ProFootballTalk cited a source with knowledge of the situation, that claims Breaston’s agent met with Steelers G.M. Kevin Colbert on Sunday. He seemed enthusiastic about potentially playing in Pittsburgh.

“I know of the Pittsburgh tradition and the winning ways, and it would be a great team to be involved with, but for me, it is all about using this process,” Breaston told the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review. “I have to take everything in and see what would be a good fit for me and where I can come in and play.”

But apparently Colbert couldn’t get the job done because reports are now surfacing that Breaston is headed to Cleveland to meet with the team.

Incredible considering the wide receiver only had 7 catches for 74 yards last season. He was essentially pushed out of the Kansas City Chiefs offense. He has shown promise at times in his career but never any real level of consistency or dependability.

Where do you get the report he has no consistency or dependability? He catches everything thrown at him but when nothing is thrown at him he obviously is not catching anything… he has been a stand up guy the entire time he’s been here. No reason to try to sensationalize another boneheaded Chiefs move. Breaston will go somewhere where they have management that is not clueless and they will get productivity out of him and he will win a superbowl, much as most Chiefs who go to other teams do in their first 3 years of being on the new team.

      1) No one attacked his character or that he was a stand up guy. 2) You’re right about consistent and dependability. He seemingly has been a consistent 700 yard receiver.

Avg 60+ catches and 700+ yards every year before being benched last season. I’d say that’s pretty consistent production.
Breaston would make a decent #2 WR or a very good #3.
Last year shouldn’t be held against him because KC’s coaching made a lot of really bad moves down the stretch. Including his benching in favor of bust Jon Baldwin.

He’s only caught over 60 passes in a season twice (1 time it was barely over at 61). Opposite a dominant wide receiver like Larry Fitzgerald with someone like Kurt Warner throwing him the ball he could succeed. Heck I’d like to see the Cowboys cut Miles Austin loose and bring in Breaston.
