First time pro bowler and Chicago Bears defensive tackle, Henry Melton has signed his franchise tender for 2013. One problem taken care of, that is, if they reach an agreement for a multi-year deal before July 15th.
The tender he signed was for $8.45 million and the Chicago Bears really needed to bring him back, so hats off to them for franchise tagging him or else he would have easily been snagged within the first hour of free agency. A defense that is growing in age, Melton could soon be the center piece of this defense and possibly captain depending on the situation with Brian Urlacher.
A young explosive defensive tackle like Melton should remain in Chicago, as they will look for replacement in key areas in the future. So I don’t know why the Bears and Melton couldn’t strike a deal here soon.
They do have plenty of time, but I’m sure they would like to get this done and over with, while juggling Brian Urlacher’s situation.
An older defense, but yet still one of the best in the league. This was a good move by the Chicago Bears front office by tagging Melton, which could only get better for both sides, potential big money for Henry Melton and more pro bowl seasons while representing the Chicago Bears.
