The Denver Broncos have added a big offensive target this offseason in Wes Welker. And Peyton Manning isn’t looking to slow down and control the ball. He wants to up the tempo on offense and wear opposing defenses out, all while hopefully putting up points.

“We can play faster,” Manning said.

“I think we averaged something like 68 plays per game last season,” Manning said. “And I think New England was No. 1 in the league with 75 plays per game.”

“For whatever reason, our offense plays better the faster we go. I think that was clear cut last season. The receivers liked it; they got into a rhythm,” Manning said. “Anything we can do as an offense to build off that, anything we can do to make us more efficient as an offense, that’s what we’re looking to do.”

To spread the ball around to all of his targets they might need to speed the offense up. They added a receiver in Welker who is used to catching over 100 balls a season. In order to keep Demaryius Thomas happy, speeding up the offense to get an extra seven to ten plays a game might be necessary.

Demaryius Thomas caught 94 passes last season while Eric Decker caught 85 passes. So to speed up the offense to get everyone their receptions could force Peyton Manning to throw 50-60 times a game maybe? And that could in turn hurt the Broncos.
