The New England Patriots made a surprise move on Monday by placing LB Brandon Spikes on season ending injured reserve, per Mike Reiss. Spikes has played through the injury for most of the season and there had been no indication that he would be placed on the injured reserve. That is a tough loss for the Patriots.
The Patriots will take on the Indianapolis Colts this weekend in the playoffs and will miss having their linebacker in there. The Colts will look to take advantage of the absence of Spikes on the defense. Rookie Jamie Collins and Dane Fletcher will have to step in and make plays on defense.
The Patriots will have an answer though. They may move to a lot more nickel packages on defense in order to counter the loss of Spikes. It will be interesting to see how the Colts plan on attacking the defense with Spikes out of the picture.
