20. Week 17 – Chargers 27, Chiefs 24
The Chiefs rested 20 of 22 starters but still played an impressive game. San Diego kicked a tying field goal on its final possession of the game to send it into overtime against the Chiefs’ JV squad.
Then came the fun (and controversial) part of the game. Chiefs kicker Ryan Succop missed a 41-yard field goal with four seconds left – the Chargers’ season could’ve been over. San Diego had eight men on one side of the ball before the snap on the field-goal miss – that’s an illegal formation, but it wasn’t called.
In overtime, Eric Weddle called for a fake punt and got it. He fumbled, but the play wasn’t reviewable because the refs ruled that his forward progress had been stopped. San Diego kicked a field goal on that drive and stopped the Chiefs on a 4th and 15 to get to the playoffs.
Even though the Chiefs had backups in, the season finale was an exciting football game.
