The Kansas City Chiefs are working on a new deal for Alex Smith. There has been a dialogue between the two sides and they are looking to extend his deal so that he can stay with the Chiefs for a long time. He will be a free agent after the 2014 season:

“We have begun the dialogue with his representatives,” he said. “Where it goes or whether it’s something that gets done here in the offseason or during the season or perhaps even at the end of the season, I really don’t know how that’s going to play out.” – Clark Hunt told 610 Sports

Alex Smith was a big reason for the Chiefs rise up in the standings this season. His stability at the position was huge and he was a leader in the locker room and in the huddle. Down the stretch, he had the offense moving at a good rate and he almost led the team to a victory over the Indianapolis Colts in the playoffs.

Smith deserves a new deal and the Chiefs need to keep him in town for a while. The two sides are working on getting that deal done though.
