“Defense wins championships.” This is one of the oldest expressions when it comes to the game of football. Well, that statement couldn’t be any more accurate. After what we saw last season with the Seattle Seahawks, teams will line up out the door to try to acquire the services of some of the top defensive talent in this year’s free agent class.
It’s hard to argue that the deepest position in this year’s free agency is the entire secondary. With players such as Jairus Byrd, T.J. Ward and Alterraun Verner all available, teams throughout the league have the opportunity to bolster their secondary in an attempt to either make a run or win next year’s Super Bowl. The defensive line is another position that has a surplus of talent on the open market.
Free agency is one of my favorite times of the year. We get to see teams bid against each other and things can really get interesting. As always, I am sure there will be that one signing that surprises everyone. It happens every year. Also, which players will earn their money and which players will disappoint their new team? Free agency is just a fun time on the NFL calendar. Below, I ranked my top five defensive players that will be on the open market and ready to negotiate their new contracts.. Enjoy!
