The NFL Draft: What Does It All Mean?
Watch NFL Network and ESPN and they’ll tell you that the Draft is one of the most important things in an NFL teams’ off-season. It is a lottery for some, for others, it’s just another high profile try-out. For those who may not know or for those who are not familiar with the draft this season, there is perhaps one of the best drafts in recent years for quarterbacks. From Johnny Manziel to Derek Carr, to Teddy Bridgewater, to Blake Bortles to even Jimmy Garoppolo, this draft is loaded with QBs galore. However, many QBs in this draft have gone by the wayside; QBs that perhaps did poorly during the regular season are suddenly getting recognition while those who played the same or even better are being largely ignored. Granted there has been some workouts, I feel that sometimes QBs regular season careers and post-season careers are often times ignored when compared to off-season workouts and performance at the scouting combine. If you understand anything from this article, understand this: off-season workouts do matter. Do not get me wrong, I believe that workouts and 40-yard dash times and all of that stuff is a major indicator of player success and health. However with that said, I think that too many times too much emphasis is placed on the combine and workouts, not necessarily by teams or scouts, but rather by the media and the public. There are a multitude of things that contribute, but the overall premise of the draft remains the same: the ultimate opportunity for a rags to riches experience. The NFL Draft, the chance at the American Dream and so much more.
