The San Francisco 49ers are not expected to pick up the 5th-year option on Aldon Smith, per Adam Schefter. The 49ers had the ability to exercise that option, but will not make that move. Smith is a mess right now and the team doesn’t want to commit to having him on the roster past this season, if they even want to keep him around for this season.

Smith is facing three felony gun charges as well as a DUI charge that forced him to go into rehab last season. He also had that crazy story of reporting a false bomb threat at LA International Airport that got him arrested as well.

Smith needs to get his act together. He is falling apart at the seams. All kinds of legal issues are creeping up on him and all that extra baggage could have him sitting on the sideline for a good amount of time. Teams are not going to want to invest in someone that can’t get his act right.
