The Dallas Cowboys are tired of waiting for Kyle Orton to get back on the field and they have decided to release him off of the roster, per Adam Schefter. After the release, Orton will get to keep his signing bonus.
The Cowboys will be looking toward Brandon Weeden to take over the backup quarterback role. Tony Romo’s back is a question mark for the season and Weeden will get plenty of reps in training camp. Romo still is recovering from his injury and may not be fully ready to make his return at the start of the season. Orton would have been a perfect person to fill the starting job if Romo were to have any setbacks, but Orton was not thrilled about playing this season.
With the Cowboys release of Orton, the team will have $1.275M in dead space this year and $2.255M in dead space next year. After the release, Kyle Orton could be announcing his retirement from the game.
