Baltimore Ravens RB Bernard Pierce will start the first 2 games of the season with Ray Rice serving a suspension. He could hold onto the starting job for even longer based on the production from training camp.
Here is the report from ESPN:
Bernard Pierce has been the best running back in camp. He played in a similar running scheme in college, and he has had the best transition to Kubiak’s stretch, zone-blocking runs.
Gary Kubiak was brought in this offseason to run the offense and brought over the zone-blocking running plays. Kubiak will share the work load on his backs, but Pierce seems to be the back to trust at this point.
Pierce finished last season with 436 yards rushing on 152 carries for a 2.9 yard average. He will have to do better than that with his opportunities this season. The whole rushing offense struggled last season though and that is why Kubiak was brought into town. Hopefully the new scheme will open up some running lanes and allow the backs to make some plays.
