The Detroit Lions are getting ready to kick off tonight’s preseason game against the Jacksonville Jaguars at 7:30 p.m. ET, and they’ll be without Kyle Van Noy, James Ihedigbo, and another rookie in wideout TJ Jones. That said, young defensive end Ziggy Ansah will be playing today, even if he won’t get the start as he recovers from a shoulder injury.

  • According to Lions official site beat writer Tim Twentyman, Ansah will get some playing time tonight, but Devin Taylor will get the start. Ansah has more natural ability than Taylor as a former first-round pick, but Taylor was even better last season and is another young DE worth taking a close look at. He’s still the more consistent player, but Ansah has real breakout potential that probably won’t be realized until 2015.

Ansah recorded 30 tackles and a whopping eight sacks last season, and those sack totals are a statistical glimpse of the talent he flashes. An athletic freak, the BYU product is capable of the incredible, but the key is consistency. He was activated from the active/PUP list a couple of weeks ago, and it’s great to hear that we’ll be able to see him in tonight’s regular season dress rehearsal.
