Green Bay Packers could consider Eric Winston

Green Bay Packers starting right tackle Bryan Bulaga went down in last night’s opener against the Seattle Seahawks, and ‘Hawks star DE Cliff Avril had an absolute field day with his replacement, as neither LT Dave Bakhtiari or Derek Sherrod could cope with one of the league’s best DE duos in either the passing or running game. The Packers were manhandled up front on both sides of the ball, with Sherrod looking especially poor. Bulaga missed the entire 2013 season with a torn ACL, so the Packers know how to survive without him. He’s only dealing with a 2-4 week MCL tear, so the Packers should theoretically be stronger once he returns, but it could come at the cost of having a disadvantage against three straight NFC North rivals with talented pass rushers in a tight division race.

  • ESPN NFL Nation’s Rob Demovsky reports that the Packers could consider signing veteran right tackle Eric Winston while Bulaga recovers over the next few weeks, but Demovsky warns us that there’s “nothing concrete there yet”. The “yet” is actually pretty key, since the phrasing “may be considering” seemed a bit on the vague side.

Winston was released by the Seattle Seahawks during the 53-man roster crunchdown after being viewed as a depth option, so we’ll see if the NFLPA president can net a new job with another playoff-caliber squad. The Packers could use some veteran depth with mostly unproven options, but it’s unclear how much Winston has left after uncharacteristically struggling for the OT-challenged Arizona Cardinals last year and subsequently losing to Justin Britt in training camp, though Britt was admittedly excellent last night. There isn’t much here at this point in time, but this is a situation worth monitoring.
