New Orleans Saints starting Joe Morgan

The New Orleans Saints ruled out wide receiver Kenny Stills yesterday with a quad injury, and they have replaced one dynamic deep threat with another in the starting lineup. As expected, ESPN NFL Nation’s Mike Triplett reports that the Saints are officially listing Joe Morgan as one of their starting wide receivers, as he worked out with the first-team offense during pre-game warm-ups.

  • Morgan is healthy and back on track after missing the 2013 season, and he looks ready to build on a preseason that included a three-catch, 108-yard performance against the Tennessee Titans. This guy has the upside to be one of the league’s best situational deep threats, but his biggest impact on the Saints offense won’t be the plays; it will be the way he opens things up for the others, especially Brandin Cooks underneath.

With Nick Toon also inactive, the stage is set for youngsters Cook and Morgan to have nice days against the Atlanta Falcons. This NFC South rivalry should be another classic shootout, and the Falcons are susceptible to the deep ball. No. 1 corner Desmond Trufant could become an elite talent this year, but Drew Brees and the Saints should have plenty of success through the air, especially when taking into account the likely pace of this contest.
