The Kansas City Chiefs are reeling after losing to the Tennessee Titans in an upset loss yesterday, but their two biggest losses were the season-ending injuries to Derrick Johnson and run-stuffing DE Mike DeVito, with Johnson’s injury being easily the most crushing loss of them all. It’s the fateful day after the fallout for Chiefs fans, and reporters were unsurprisingly trying to get answers out of head coach Andy Reid, especially since the Chiefs inexplicably handed the rock to the key of their offense just seven times.

  • Charles struggled to just 19 yards on those seven carries, but it wasn’t his fault; the blocking in front of him was incompetent. The entire Chiefs offensive line looked like a JV team out there, and they were ripped to shreds by star DL Jurrell Casey, who has apparently taken well to Ray Horton’s hybrid 3-4 scheme. Even though Charles was inefficient on the ground in his first game without Geoff Schwartz, Branden Albert, and Jon Asamoah, he still should have received more carries.

Give credit to Reid for holding himself accountable and admitting the mistake. According to Terez A. Paylor of the Kansas City Star, Reid stated that not giving Charles the ball more often was “negligence” on his part. That much is clear to most people, and some would even say that the Chiefs unwillingness to give him the ball was outright stupidity. He’s easily the best and most important player on this offense and team as a whole, but at least Reid isn’t hiding the fact that the coaching staff made a mistake.

Reid also stated, per Paylor, that he should have allowed rookie edge rusher Dee Ford to get more snaps and “work him into the rotation”. That would also be a good idea, considering the Chiefs invested a first-round pick in Ford and only gave him three snaps, per the Pro Football Focus, yesterday.
