Baltimore Ravens looking to trade Arthur Brown?

The Baltimore Ravens are incredibly deep at the inside linebacker position, and it looked like star veteran Daryl Smith and second-year pro Arthur Brown would form a top-notch duo this season, but the Ravens duo became even more talented when they drafted all-around linebacking maestro C.J. Mosley in the first round. Ozzie Newsome was definitely sold on Mosley, who can cover and defend the run at a high level with some blitzing ability thrown in for good measure, as he drafted the ILB instead of picking a player to fill another need. Mosley topped off an aggressive, impressive offseason from the Ravens front office, but it made Brown, who was a touted prospect in his own right in the 2013 NFL Draft, an expendable piece.

  • Well, it looks like the Ravens are willing to swap Brown for an asset somewhere, though it would likely be a pick of some significance given Brown’s upside, college play at Kansas State, and draft pedigree; the Ravens would probably like to recoup around what they spent on him. ESPN’s Adam Caplan reports that the 24-year-old linebacker has been “the subject” of trade discussions between the Ravens and other organizations.

It’s unclear who initiate these talks, how far these talks have gone, or how many teams are interested (let alone which teams are interested). But it’s clear that the Ravens are willing to trade Brown for two reasons: firstly, he’s logjammed at ILB and, secondly, multiple teams wouldn’t be speaking with the Ravens if they didn’t have some interest in moving him. They re-signed Smith this offseason and definitely have long-term plans for Mosley, so it only makes sense for Newsome to see what’s out there. Brown can be a valuable starter in this league, so the Ravens obviously aren’t going to get rid of him for free. We also know that Newsome is willing to trade, as he’s been involved in a few in-season trades during his career, including Lee Evans and, last year, the excellent deal to bring in Eugene Monroe, who is re-signed as the team’s top-notch blindside protector.

I would be shocked if John Dorsey and the Kansas City Chiefs haven’t inquired to the Ravens about Brown’s availability, and I wouldn’t be surprised at all to se a report linking the Chiefs as one of the team’s in discussions with the Ravens over Brown. With Derrick Johnson out for the year, the Chiefs desperately need to add someone with talent, even if Brown also fits in as a long-term piece; I think he’s worth at least calling for. I mean, the Chiefs have kicked the tires on Jerel Worthy in the form of a workout, so why not at least ask about Brown?
