New York Jets Dee Milliner ‘very optimistic’ he can play

New York Jets No. 1 cornerback Dee Milliner unsurprisingly missed the team’s opener against the Oakland Raiders, but the Jets, contrary to what many of us feared, survived and won in a tough victory propelled by a long TD run from Chris Ivory. Even though Milliner was out and the Jets secondary looked to be in shambles on paper, they were pretty solid against an anemic Raiders passing attack. Offensive coordinator Greg Olson was concerned with the Jets aggressive front seven, so they utilized far too many simple passes that played into the Jets hands. Instead of testing vulnerable DBs deep, they kept things in front of converted-safety Antonio Allen and actual safety Dawan Landry. Denarius Moore could have fooled us into thinking he was a turncoat, as he caught just two passes for eight yards and did not deserve the eight targets that went his way.

  • The Jets won’t be able to get away with that this week, as they will face against Raiders GM Reggie McKenzie’s old team. The Green Bay Packers passing attack was held down by an excellent Seattle Seahawks secondary that didn’t miss a beat, but this offense has a chance to be one of the league’s most explosive with stars like Aaron Rodgers, Jordy Nelson, and Randall Cobb.

According to Rich Cimini of ESPN New York, Milliner is “very optimistic” that he will be able to play this week, as he returned to practice today. Jets head coach Rex Ryan said that his top corner participated “quite a bit” in team drills, so he is making a nice recovery from his high-ankle sprain. Milliner will have his hands full against Nelson and Cobb, but he’s their best hope against two of the league’s most talented wideouts. There’s no doubt that Milliner has plenty of talent on his own, as he was easily the top CB prospect in the 2013 NFL Draft and showed off his high upside as he slowly rounded into form over the course of the 2013 season.
