Odell Beckham Jr. not practicing today

New York Giants rookie wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr. was one of my favorite prospects heading into the 2014 NFL Draft, and I actually had him ranked a bit higher than Mike Evans due to his incredible versatility. Not only can Beckham Jr. bring it on returns, but he can win just about anywhere on the field. OBJ has the ability to stretch defenses deep, he can generate yards after the catch off of screens, and he has the hands, route-running, and quickness to win in the middle-of-the-field with regularity while working out of the slot or outside the hashmarks. Despite his 5’11” frame, he was also one of the best receivers in college football in contested catch situations, and that might be the most astounding thing on his impressive resume.

  • We haven’t been able to see anything on his resume in action this season, because he’s been dealing with a nagging hamstring injury that has probably aggravated on multiple occasions. According to the New York Daily News’s Ralph Vacchiano, Beckham Jr. is unsurprisingly not practicing today, and there’s a strong chance the Giants could hold him out for the rest of the month as a precaution. Hamstring injuries are tricky, and you don’t want to risk a player who is this young.

The Giants quick-strike passing offense under Ben McAdoo has been a disaster thus far, as Eli Manning, who isn’t a quick-strike quarterback, has had some trouble adjusting to it. He wasn’t as terrible as the stats indicated in Monday night’s drubbing at the hands of the Detroit Lions, but he was still pretty bad; it’s just that his beat-up offensive line was even worse, meaning that it could be the same story as last year. Like Victor Cruz, Beckham Jr. can make things happen on short routes with the ball in his hands, and his versatility as a receiver makes him perfect for the Giants offense. He needs to get healthy to add something to this attack, and there’s a chance his return could be a catalyst. While the injury has put him behind the learning curve, he did play in a pro-style offense under Cam Cameron at LSU.
