Brandon Marshall, Alshon Jeffery have 75-percent chance of being out

Things are not looking up for the Chicago Bears as they get ready to face the elite San Francisco 49ers on Sunday Night Football and bounce back from last week’s disappointing overtime loss to the Buffalo Bills. Per a source close to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, there is a 75% chance that both Brandon Marshall and Alshon Jeffery miss today’s game against the 49ers, and that could spell disaster for an offense built on their star wideouts.

  • Both Marshall and Jeffery are officially listed questionable on the injury report, and only Jeffery practiced on Friday. Marshall is ailing from an ankle injury, while Jeffery is looking to play through a hamstring issue and seems more likely to play due to his more favorable practice status. At the same time, Marshall is such a tough and established player that he doesn’t need practice to play, so that’s a reason why he’s still a game-time decision this week in what will be a huge challenge for the Bears.

If neither player can go (it, sadly, look like that will be the case), then Jay Cutler will be forced to throw it to Santonio Holmes on plenty of occasions as the team’s de facto No. 1 receiver. Holmes drew rave reviews in the offseason after signing a one-year deal with the Bears, but his regular season debut with the team was absolutely horrible. The only good news for the Bears is that Tramaine Brock will most likely sit out with an injury, so that leaves the 49ers down one starting corner.

It looks like the Bears decision to call up two practice squad receivers yesterday was indeed an ominous sign, but there’s still hope that at least one player on the NFL’s most exciting WR duo can play, even if that hope is waning.
