Johnny Manziel will be used in packages after all?

The Cleveland Browns could have a tough time against the Super Bowl contending New Orleans Saints today, especially since star tight end Jordan Cameron will most likely be out after aggravating a shoulder injury last week. Although Cameron still has a shot at playing, he never practiced this week, and it seems like the Browns are just trying to hold out hope that he can beat the odds. Cameron is clearly the star of the passing attack, especially since Brian Hoyer only likes to throw short, simple throws, especially ones in the middle of the field. That won’t change against the Saints weak inside linebackers, but he won’t have Cameron to lean on; it will be a steady dose of Andrew Hawkins.

  • We won’t see a steady dose of this, but it looks like the Browns will sprinkle in some special packages with Johnny Manziel after all. CBS Sports’s Jason La Canfora reports that we should “look for” Manziel packages, since innovative offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan will try and make up for the losses of his two best weapons. Not only are the Browns facing an offense capable of scoring 30 in every game, but they are also facing a defense that is much better than they showed in last week’s 37-34 overtime loss to an on-fire Matt Ryan and the Atlanta Falcons.

This report from La Canfora goes against what we’ve heard from local beat writers and what we’ve come to know so far this season. It’s not a bad thing, though, because it’s fun to watch and could be helpful. Generally good things happen when Shanahan gets creative, so we’ll see what he can put together today if the Browns do choose to use these packages.
