RG3 Injury Update: No fracture, could be out 6-8 weeks

Washington Redskins quarterback Robert Griffin III suffered a serious injury in yesterday’s blowout win over the Jacksonville Jaguars, as he went down early in the first quarter on a non-contact scramble. The injury immediately looked serious, and we learned that he dislocated his ankle and had an initial timetable of 4-5 weeks. Jason Cole reported earlier this morning that RG3’s timetable was still locked in at 4-5 weeks, but it looks like that’s no longer the case.

  • The NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reports that while RG3 only has a dislocated ankle (an MRI revealed that he did not fracture his ankle), he could still miss 6-8 weeks, which is significantly longer than the initial timetable. That’s more starts for Kirk Cousins, who could easily end up Wally Pipping RG3, especially since the rumors of how the Redskins coaching staff view him as the better QB haven’t ceased. In fact, they’ve only increased and will continue to increase if Cousins can do well against a legit defense (the feast against the Jaguars was born out of some pathetic coverage from the opposition).

A 6-8 week timetable puts RG3 in the short-term injured reserve range, but Rapoport reminds us that they already used that designation on somebody. Who did they use it on? Nose tackle Barry Cofield. The Redskins will most likely keep RG3 on the 53-man roster, but that could actually change if Cousins impresses enough over the next few weeks.
