Austin Davis looks ready to start again

St. Louis Rams quarterback Shaun Hill went down with a thigh injury during the team’s Week 1 blowout loss to the Minnesota Vikings, and backup quarterback Austin Davis came in and looked better than the veteran Hill, who is widely regarded as one of the NFL’s best backup QBs. Davis threw an interception with no touchdowns, but he looked more comfortable in the offense, efficient, and athletic than his veteran counterpart. Hill was relatively health and was active against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in Week 2, but it was Davis who was always prepared to start and delivered a quality performance in a gritty, 19-17 victory.

  • According to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch’s Jim Thomas, Davis received the “lion’s share” of reps during team drills, with former Houston Texans QB Case Keenum also garnering some of the reps with the first-team today. Hill’s injury concerns are behind him, but the Rams are clearly going to roll with Davis, who has shown that he gives the team the best chance of winning. But if his impressive play starts to falter, then the Rams could eventually play Keenum if he shows enough knowledge of the offense.

Against the Buccaneers, Davis completed a very impressive 22 of his 29 passes for a total of 235 yards, yielding a crisp 8.1 yards per attempt. He’s looked OK in a game manager role behind the Rams consistent running game, and that will be the team’s formula for the time being.
