Detroit Lions Rumors: Ndamukong Suh expected to hit FA market

facebooktwitterreddit

The Detroit Lions tried to extend star defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh before the start of the regular season, but they were unable to get any headway in negotiations. Despite receiving an even bigger rookie contract than usual, Suh fired the agent who netted him that deal, and that move made it clear that Suh is looking for a ridiculous sum of money. At this point, I definitely think he’s looking to make more money than Mario Williams received from the Buffalo Bills, and his demands are most likely too rich for the tastes of Martin Mayhew and the rest of the Lions organization.

  • Per sources close to CBS Sports’s Jason La Canfora, the Lions remain “optimistic” that they can come to an agreement on a contract extension with Suh before the start of free agency in 2015, but many within league circles tell La Canfora that they don’t think it’s likely for the Lions to agree to a deal with Suh before he hits the open market. Based on his play this season and upside, Suh would want to cash in and test the open market, and the Lions own cap constraints will make it very difficult to prevent Suh from doing that.

That said, La Canfora reports that Suh is “very supportive” of new Lions head coach Jim Caldwell and would like to remain with the team, but, as La Canfora reminds us when closing his piece, it’s all about the money. Can the Lions find enough to keep him from hitting the open market? Everything is fluid at this point, and Suh will become an incredibly interesting storyline in the offseason.
