Wes Welker did not suffer any setbacks

Denver Broncos slot receiver Wes Welker has always been locked in to play in today’s Super Bowl rematch against the Seattle Seahawks after being reinstated following the agreement between the NFL and NFLPA on a new, less Draconian substance-abuse policy. Welker was also previously dealing with some more concussion issues, but those are well past him as he looks to be a factor against the Seahawks. Of course, one thing standing in his way will be targets, as he isn’t as much of a playmaker as the other receivers around him, but his playing style as a steady slot hand makes him valuable against a defense like the Seahawks, especially since Earl Thomas doesn’t allow many big plays.

  • According to CBS Sports’s Jason La Canfora, Welker did not suffer any setbacks at practice this week, which is solid confirmation of what his probable listing on the injury report indicate. However, La Canfora’s disclaimer is that Welker’s snap count isn’t guaranteed due to the additional depth on the Broncos offense. It will be interesting to see if Peyton Manning gives him a nice diet of passes early on in order to gain some confidence and move the chains on the Seahawks before throwing more passes to speedy outside guys Demaryius Thomas and Emmanuel Sanders.

Welker was one of the lone bright spots in the team’s blowout loss in February, as he put in some great work on Walter Thurmond, who is no longer with the Seahawks after signing with the New York Giants in the offseason (sadly, he’s out for the year with a torn pectoral). The Seahawks still have plenty of depth and talent at CB even with Jeremy Lane out for the year, but Welker still seems to have the best matchup on paper, since he won’t have to face Richard Sherman or Byron Maxwell. That said, he isn’t a good fantasy football option, because his upside is tapered by other wideouts and a lack of big plays.
