Vernon Davis Injury: San Francisco 49ers ‘optimistic’ TE will play

San Francisco 49ers star tight end Vernon Davis was listed doubtful for yesterday’s game against the rival Arizona Cardinals, but some people were still holding out hope that he would be able to play after making some progress over the week. He managed to catch some passes from the JUGGs machine and earn some praise from fellow TE Vance McDonald (also did not play after being listed doubtful), but there was no way he was going to play after being spotted on crutches following a Week 2 ankle injury against the Chicago Bears.

  • According to the San Francisco Chronicle’s Eric Branch, 49ers head coach Jim Harbaugh announced that the team is “optimistic” that Davis will be able to play in next week’s game against the Philadelphia Eagles, adding that the team is “very hopeful” he’ll be out there.

Davis is an incredibly tough guy, so I wouldn’t bet against him with another week to heal up. When he was out yesterday, the 49ers unsurprisingly used their wide receivers a lot more in the passing game, but they weren’t able to beat the Cardinals. While Colin Kaepernick completed a high percentage of his passes and had a strong day on the ground, the 49ers barely ran the ball with their running backs and didn’t generate enough aggressive passing plays.
