Jay Gruden still won’t rule out Kirk Cousins as possible franchise QB
Throughout the offseason, we’ve heard rumors about how some members of the Washington Redskins organization, including possibly new head coach Jay Gruden, believe Kirk Cousins is a better fit for the offense than Robert Griffin III despite RG3’s superior raw talent. Cousins is held in high esteem by a number of analysts, and, probably teams, as the Redskins rejected overtures from former offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan and the Cleveland Browns. Why? The Redskins like Cousins, and Bruce Allen knew that he couldn’t afford to deal a capable backup given RG3’s injury history.

According to NJ.com’s Jordan Raanan, Gruden still won’t rule out the possibility of Cousins becoming the team’s franchise quarterback by permanently replacing RG3 this year. Griffin is out for for 6-8 weeks with a dislocated ankle, which gives Cousins an excellent opportunity, which he has been taking full advantage of this point, to show off his talents and prove that he’s a better long-term fit. It’s a charged situation and is more nuanced than a few people are making it out to be (don’t forget the Dan Snyder factor here).
Per Raanan, Gruden stated that, “crazy things can happen,” though some would argue that the thought of Cousins Wally Pipping RG3 isn’t crazy at all, especially when looking at how RG3’s injuries prevent him from being reliable.
