Jerry Jones admits Morris Claiborne won’t live up to expectations but still thinks he’ll be good

Dallas Cowboys cornerback Morris Claiborne has been one of the worst players at the position since coming into the league, and, at this rate, he’ll be remembered as one of the biggest busts in recent memory. Coming out of LSU, Claiborne was actually seen by many as a better prospect coming out than current Arizona Cardinals superstar CB Patrick Peterson; it wasn’t just a matter of the Cowboys screwing up. Based on his college play, Claiborne did indeed seem destined for stardom as a true shutdown corner, but he has been anything but “shutdown” here in his third season in the league.

  • According to the Fort Worth Star-Telegram’s Drew Davison, Cowboys czar Jerry Jones essentially admitted that Claiborne will never live up to his lofty draft expectations as the sixth overall pick, “Is he what we had hoped for at this point when we drafted him with the sixth overall pick, giving up the [second-round] pick to go up to the sixth pick to get him? No. But he’s going to be a good player.”

I don’t know if Jones actually believes that Claiborne will be a “good player”, or if he is trying to tone down what could otherwise be seen as a very scathing comment. Claiborne has been an unmitigated disaster, and he hasn’t shown any signs of a third-year breakout thus far, getting whipped in embarrassing fashion on Sunday by the Austin Davis-led St. Louis Rams. And if that isn’t enough, Claiborne is not only wildly ineffective and burn-prone, but he is also extremely injury-prone.

In case you were wondering, I was one of those people who thought Claiborne would be great.
