Josh McCown Injury: Tampa Bay Buccaneers QB ‘very unlikely’ this week

Tampa Bay Buccaneers starting quarterback Josh McCown might not hold that title for much longer after three straight poor performances to begin his Buccaneers career, because second-year pro Mike Glennon has a great chance at unseating the veteran journeyman. McCown blossomed last season under Marc Trestman with Brandon Marshall and Alshon Jeffery as his two staple targets, but he hasn’t found the same success with Lovie Smith, Mike Evans, and Vincent Jackson. In the team’s embarrassing Thursday Night Football loss to the Atlanta Falcons, McCown’s awful 5-12 day was capped off by a “significant” thumb sprain that caused him to exit the game.

Although McCown is optimistic that he can play in this week’s game against the beatable Pittsburgh Steelers secondary (their defense took a huge hit with three major injuries to put a sour note on an impressive blowout win on SNF over the Carolina Panthers), it doesn’t look like he’s expected to suit up. The Tampa Bay Times’s Greg Auman reports that it’s “very unlikely” for McCown to be healthy enough to play.

Honestly, the injury also doubles as a convenient excuse for Smith and the Buccaneers, because they now have a great reason to see what Glennon can do. The Bucs have tabbed – though whether or not the statement is genuine is up for debate- Glennon as their QB of the future, so I wonder how curious the Bucs are to see if the “future” is better than the stopgap. At this point, it looks like that will be the case.
