RG3 expected to willingly take backup role?

Washington Redskins franchise quarterback Robert Griffin III is at risk of losing his job once he comes back from a 6-8 week ankle dislocation that he suffered early in the Week 2 win over the Jacksonville Jaguars. Kirk Cousins, who is seen by some as a better fit for the offense and a more reliable QB, has put up some huge numbers in each of the past two weeks, and he could Wally Pipp RG3 if he continues to put together strong performances. Although Cousins isn’t as athletically gifted as RG3, he makes up for the gap in talent by staying healthy, showing more poise in the pocket, and making better decisions.

  • The NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reports that the Redskins “firmly believe” RG3 would react well to a benching, as they seem him as a “team guy”, which contrasts other reports we’ve heard stating that RG3 is a selfish player (some pointed to his star treatment at Baylor and star treatment in the NFL by Redskins authoritarian owner Dan Snyder).

This will be an ongoing saga throughout the year, and the only way it will end is if Cousins flops during what is essentially a “tryout” period for the starting quarterback designation under new head coach Jay Gruden, who has shown that he’s more than open to starting the less-decorated Michigan State product. The loser of this battle could end up getting traded, especially if Cousins plays well throughout the season and RG3 doesn’t play nice with the Redskins. I mean, he’s so talented that he knows he’d get a shake elsewhere despite his injury history.
