E.J. Manuel mentoring Jameis Winston

Buffalo Bills starting quarterback E.J. Manuel has helped lead the team to a surprise 2-1 start after impressive wins over the Chicago Bears and Miami Dolphins in the first two weeks, and he looks much better than he did last season and even in the preseason. Manuel was a raw prospect coming out of Florida State, but the Bills liked his upside and traits enough to make him the only quarterback taken in the first round of the 2013 NFL Draft. After a rough rookie season, Manuel became a lightning road for criticism, but he’s quietly put up some solid numbers through three weeks with a quality completion percentage, a steady seven yards per attempt, and three TDs to just one interception.

    • The NFL Network’s Albert Breer reports that not only is Manuel playing a key role for the Bills as their franchise quarterback and a distributor for the Bills talented skill position players, but he is also playing an important role for his alma matter. Manuel is mentoring Florida State superstar QB Jameis Winston, who is clearly in need of desperate mentoring after several off-the-field incidents. Scouts repeatedly state in reports that Winston “doesn’t get it”.

    Manuel is an exceptional leader and someone Winston can definitely learn from, so I love that the ‘Noles are asking a former star QB to help out a current one. Winston is a much better player than Manuel was in college, but his character concerns are an enormous cloud. Breer reports that Manuel and Winston speak with each other at least once every week, so hopefully that’s helping Winston.
