Josh McCown Injury: Tampa Bay Buccaneers QB could require surgery

Tampa Bay Buccaneers veteran quarterback Josh McCown was a disaster in three starts to begin the regular season, and he hit a low point in the team’s 56-14 blowout loss to the rival Atlanta Falcons on Thursday Night Football. To be “fair”, his fumble-interception combo in Week 1 was probably worse, but the fact that he sustained a significant thumb injury made things even worse.

  • Per a source close to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, Josh McCown has a torn ligament in his thumb, and he could require surgery on it. Per Schefter, McCown will throw tomorrow to see how bad the pain is, and he could be out for at least six weeks if he does go under the knife. It’s a situation worth monitoring closely, because surgery for McCown would give Mike Glennon an even longer potential tryout date.

Most fans want to see Glennon out there, and the second-year quarterback certainly has superior physical tools. It looks like Glennon could start the rest of the way, because the Buccaneers would end up drafting a first-round quarterback if they see that Glennon isn’t the answer. It’s clear at this point that McCown is nothing more than a backup who benefited greatly from his set-up with the Chicago Bears, though he can be a viable stopgap if he were to bounce back. But at this point, it doesn’t look like he’ll play another snap this year, even if he avoids surgery; Glennon would have to screw up badly for that to happen.
