Dennis Allen gets canned

The Oakland Raiders were largely expected to part ways with head coach Dennis Allen if the team fell flat in their Sunday game in London against the Miami Dolphins, and it’s painfully obvious that they played an incredibly pathetic game against Ryan Tannehill and Co. Allen knew that he was coaching for his job, but the Raiders still managed to get beaten badly in all facets of the game, with promising rookie QB Derek Carr unable to get anything going to salvage something out of the 38-14 loss.

  • Some Raiders fans will argue that firing Allen is enough of a sacrifice to be a silver lining, and after rampant rumors swirling around, it seemed that a firing was imminent, especially given Mark Davis’s ominous words following the loss. Now, FOX Sports’s ultra-reliable Jay Glazer reports that the Raiders told Allen that he can pack his bags and never come back.

Hopefully the Raiders do the same to GM Reggie McKenzie, who is the grand architect of the Raiders lack of talent. Derek Carr and Khalil Mack were dream draft picks, and McKenzie deserves plenty of credit for finding T.J. Carrie. But, unfortunately, he hasn’t done much else, and drafting Mack and Carr should have been easy decisions anyway. If the Raiders want a great coach who can help Carr and Co. elevate this team, then they need to fire their GM and add some more difference-makers (Leonard Williams comes to mind as a draft prospect).

We’ll see what the future holds for the Raiders, but expect someone like Greg Olson to become the team’s interim coach before promptly getting demoted or sacrificed for the next head coach’s choice of coordinators. At 0-4, the Raiders season probably isn’t going to be saved, but it was always about the future anyway. And with Mack and Carr, the future can be bright if Davis can get it right on the coach/GM front.

I was once on Allen’s side and still actually believe he wasn’t the team’s biggest problem, but it was time for a change at the head coaching position, especially when it comes to a cultural change.
