Jerry Jones on Tony Romo: ‘I don’t know that I can say that I’ve ever seen him play better’

The Dallas Cowboys are playing better ball than anyone else in the league right now, as their elite offensive line has paved the way for a fantastic start to the season from star running back DeMarco Murray, who is building on last season’s breakout performance. If Murray can continue to stay healthy, then there’s no reason why he shouldn’t finish the year as the NFL’s leading rusher, with both Tony Romo and Dez Bryant, as always, providing big numbers in the passing game. The Cowboys defense was supposed to be an embarrassment, but they haven’t let the offense down, largely thanks to some great play from offseason acquisitions Henry Melton and Rolando McClain.

More from Dallas Cowboys

Romo, of course, is at the heart of the Cowboys success each year, and they probably would have made the playoffs if he didn’t suffer a back injury late last season, causing him to miss that decisive Week 17 game against the Philadelphia Eagles. Romo has taken a scary shot or two this year, but he’s healthy and still dominant with a great performance against the Seattle Seahawks vaunted defense now under his belt. Overall, Romo has 11 touchdowns and five interceptions, with three of those picks coming in that Week 1 debacle against the San Francisco 49ers that the entire team has completely recovered from. Romo also has an average of 7.9 yards per attempt and is completing an extraordinary 68.6% of his passes (his career-high is 69.5%).

Easily one of the league’s top ten quarterbacks, Romo has played at a high level throughout his career, but Cowboys owner/GM Jerry Jones thinks that his franchise QB is playing better than he ever has. Jones said on KRLD-FM, via the Fort Worth Star-Telegram’s Drew Davison, “I don’t know that I can say that I’ve ever seen him play better. We’ve seen him certainly do what Romo does. That is instinctively make plays. We’ve seen him basically protect the ball, and I know for a fact that he’s bought into his working and the coordination that he has to have with [play-caller Scott] Linehan.”

There’s no doubt that Linehan has done an amazing job running the Cowboys offense after all of the criticism his predecessors faced, and the commitment to the running game has surely helped Romo. I’m not sure if this is his best season, but he’s playing so darn well that it really doesn’t matter.
