Darren Sproles expects to play this week

Philadelphia Eagles running back Darren Sproles suffered a sprained left MCL in the team’s dominant Week 6 win on Sunday Night Football against the New York Giants, and it looks like the bye week has treated him well. Sproles was able to return to practice today, making him ahead of schedule after his initial timetable had him missing 2-3 weeks (or one or two games following the bye week).

If Sproles has it his way, then he might not have to miss a game, though the Eagles would probably prefer to err on the side of caution with their swiss-army knife. According to CSN Philly’s Reuben Frank, Sproles stated that he expects to play in this week’s big matchup against the Arizona Cardinals, based on the way he’s currently feeling. The former New Orleans Saints star added that the decision is, of course, Chip Kelly’s to make, but Sproles’s optimism is worth noting at this early stage.

It will be interesting to follow Sproles’s practice status throughout the week, because he could very well suit up if he practices throughout the week with no issues. He’s already off to an encouraging start, and he would have a nice matchup on tap against a Cardinals defense that would probably have issues containing him in the open field. The explosive scat back is averaging a hefty 6.6 yards per carry, and he’s also hauled in 16 passes for 198 yards.
