Jon Beason could be shut down for the season

The bad news only gets worse for the New York Giants.

After losing a number of players to season ending injuries, inside linebacker and defensive captain Jon Beason told the media there is a ’50-50′ chance he will need to end his season to undergo surgery on his toe.

Beason injured his toe during the offseason, and he has re-aggravated it twice since week one. Beason told the media he is playing without a, “crucial ligament in my big toe.” Beason could decide to play through the pain and put off surgery, but he did not have an encouraging tone.

More from New York Giants

The loss of Beason will undoubtedly be a big one for the Giants should he decide his season.

Beason came over midway through last year and immediately made an impact as he was the main catalyst for the defensive turnaround. The primary ‘Mike’ linebacker was the voice of the defense and did all of the play calling and adjustments on defense, and his aggressive play style helped make last year’s Giants defense the seventh best in the league.

If Beason is in fact done for the year, Jameel McClain will move back inside and fill the void left by Beason. Beason signed a three-year extension with the Giants in the offseason, though New York likely knew the risk of signing Beason.

The former Miami Hurricane has had a history of injuries, which is a main reason why the Panthers felt comfortable dealing him to the Giants for a mere seventh round pick.

It is interesting to note that every game Beason has played in this year (Detroit, Arizona, Philadelphia and Dallas) the Giants have lost. It remains to be seen whether or not Beason’s season is over, but it is not looking good.
