Nick Fairley left game with knee injury, possible MCL issue?

Detroit Lions talented defensive tackle Nick Fairley left today’s game against the Atlanta Falcons with a right knee injury, as his knee bent awkwardly on an incomplete pass from Matt Ryan to superstar wide receiver Julio Jones. Players crowded around Fairley, who denied a stretcher but was later seen being carted off the field. MLive.com’s Kyle Meinke reported that Fairley needed trainers to help him walk off the field, and the injury definitely didn’t look good right after he suffered it. The Lions immediately ruled him out, and that’s never a good sign.

  • FOX Sports’s Mike Garafolo tweets that Charissa Thompson stated in a sideline report that Fairley pointed towards the inside of his knee where the MCL is located, so all we know about the injury at this point (other than the fact that it could be serious) is that it could possibly contain MCL damage. It’s an interesting nugget worth sharing at this early point, but it honestly doesn’t tell us much about the nature of the injury.

With C.J. Mosley suspended for a violation of team rules, Princeton rookie Caraun Reid is the man to watch today against the Falcons offensive line, but Mosley will be back without missing a game to play in Week 10 due to a bye in Week 9. We can only hope that Fairley isn’t out for long, since he’s in the final year of his rookie deal; this injury has a chance to cost him plenty of cash. I wonder if Ndamukong Suh is looking at this injury and thinking, “Man, I need to guarantee myself as much security as possible in my lucrative contract.”

Fairley has 14 tackles and a sack this season, and he’s been excellent against the run all year long.
