Cincinnati Bengals Geno Atkins suffered ‘minor’ knee injury

Cincinnati Bengals superstar defensive tackle Geno Atkins missed just under half of the 2013 season after suffering a torn ACL, and he was placed on the active/PUP list in training camp following his surgery and subsequent rehab. As expected, Atkins recovery quickly enough and did not need to miss any games in 2014, and he hasn’t seemed to show any ill-effects this season. While he hasn’t been playing at his usual, elite level, Atkins has still been pretty dominant, and he continues to be one of the best DTs in the NFL at putting consistent pressure on the quarterback, which has been especially important with Michael Johnson gone (Johnson has been a huge disappointment in his first year with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers).

Per a source close to the NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, Atkins sustained a “slight hyperextension” of the knee that he tore his ACL last season, but, thankfully, Rapoport reports that the injury  is “minor”. That said, the same thing was reported about Giovani Bernard’s injury, and he ended up missing a couple of weeks. The Bengals are likely concerned with a potential aggravation, so we’ll see if Atkins ends up missing any games. At this point, it’s unclear what will happen going forward.

Atkins has recorded 18 tackles and 1.5 sacks this season, so his raw numbers are well off the pace of his usual production. That said, he’s still done a nice job of harassing quarterbacks, and that doesn’t often show up enough on the basic stat sheet.
