Washington Redskins Midseason Awards

facebooktwitterreddit

The Washington Redskins are on a bye this week, so I won’t be covering the keys to the game. Instead, I’ll be handing out the midseason awards for the team. The awards distributed will be: Offensive & Defensive rookie of the year, Offensive & Defensive player of the year, and MVP.

We’ll get things started by looking at the rookies.

Offensive rookie of the year – Silas Redd

There weren’t many choices for this award, it was really only a battle between Silas Redd & Ryan Grant. In their respective categories, Redd being a running back and Grant being a receiver, they have both posted similar numbers. Redd has 46 yards on the ground and Grant has 57 receiving. Silas Redd ultimately won out because he nabbed a touchdown this year, something Ryan Grant has yet to do.

Runner-up: Ryan Grant

Defensive rookie of the year – Bashaud Breeland

The injury to DeAngelo Hall forced Bashaud Breeland into a starting role for the Redskins and the rookie has responded well. The fourth-rounder out of Clemson still has a lot to learn, but he has shown that he has the potential to be a quality player in this league. His tackling has been solid, as he has posted at least 5 tackles in 3 of the last 4 games. He also has an interception and 7 passes defended this season.

Runner-up: Trent Murphy

Offensive player of the year – DeSean Jackson

The offseason acquisition of DeSean Jackson has paid off, as he has undoubtedly lived up to his big play reputation. Jackson leads the NFL with 9 catches of 40+ yards, nobody else has more than 5. His 21.8 yards per catch is better than anyone who has caught at least 15 passes this season. He currently sits at 7th in the league in receiving yards with 784.

Runner-up: Alfred Morris

Defensive player of the year – Ryan Kerrigan

Ryan Kerrigan has been great this season and I actually believe that he is the best

pass-rusher

defensive player on the team.  Kerrigan has been able to rack up 7.5 sacks so far this year, that’s good for the 7th in the league. He has also made 29 tackles and is responsible for forcing 2 fumbles. Ryan Kerrigan is a smart, instinctive player who isn’t afraid to make the big play and that’s why he gets my vote.

Runner-up: Keenan Robinson

Most Valuable Player – DeSean Jackson

I’ve always judged the MVP race by asking myself this question, “How well would the team perform without that player on their roster?” If you take DeSean Jackson and his big plays away from the Redskins this season, their offense really hasn’t been all that great. Jackson has been the Redskins offensive X-factor all season. There have been 6 occasions where a Redskins player has had 100+ receiving yards this season, Jackson is responsible for 5 of those. 4 out of his last 5 games have been 100 yard performances.

Runner-up: Ryan Kerrigan
